About Wynn Capital

The Long and Winding Road

In 1978, I moved from my hometown of Marathon, Florida, the middle island of the Florida Keys, to San Francisco to pursue a career in music. I spent the next five years as a guitarist and singer-songwriter in a couple of different bands, first the Outlets and then Aural Canvas, playing all over the Bay Area. It was a blast.

During the day I worked all over San Francisco as a temporary typist, at Crown Zellerbach, IBM, Blue Shield and plenty of others. In 1981, the temp agency sent me to a new company called Sage Clearing. The job was as a "runner" on the options floor of the Pacific Stock Exchange, entering trades from the floor traders into a computer and generating updates on their profit and loss. I worked my way up to floor manager and stayed in that role until 1984.

That random assignment changed my life. It started my career in finance, and in 1994 it's where I met my wife, Beth, who was working as a market quote terminal operator for the exchange.

After Aural Canvas broke up in 1984, I decided to try my luck as an options trader. The founders of Sage Clearing financed me, and I shared the profits and losses with my backers. After a very tough first year I figured things out and turned the corner, becoming consistently profitable.

On July 1st 1987, I paid my backers back and formed my own company, Wynn Options, with my own money. For the next nine years I traded for a living, bought a seat on the exchange and backed three other successful traders.

By late 1996 I had enough capital and income to leave the floor and live off my investment income, fifteen years after I first walked onto it. Most of that income came from renting out my seat on the exchange, which worked well from 1996 to 2001 until the bursting of the tech bubble led to the bankruptcy of the Pacific Stock Exchange.

In 2003, after the birth of our first child Lennon and with plans for another, I went back to work and founded Wynn Capital Management. Twenty-three years later, I'm glad I did.

Thomas Wynn, Founder, CEO & Senior Portfolio Manager

Thomas founded Wynn Capital in 2003 to help people navigate the very complex world of financial planning and investment management. He is a former equity derivatives trader on the floor of the Pacific Stock Exchange in San Francisco. As he puts it: trading listed options for your own account teaches you things about how markets actually work that you can't learn from a book.

"I knew from my parents' and other friends' experiences with the investment industry that there had to be a better way to help people. In 2003, the relatively new independent, fee-only fiduciary model was just gaining traction. I chose that model to truly help people, with simple, transparent fees and the obligation to put our clients' interest above our own."
